There are two main reasons EV range falls in cold weather. Regenerative braking is often limited in cold batteries because the battery can’t accept large charge currents until it warms up, removing an important source of recovered energy.

Modern EVs are getting better: many now include battery thermal management, preconditioning (warming the battery while plugged in), and heat pumps that heat the cabin far more efficiently than resistive heaters — reducing range loss by roughly 8–10% in some models. Newer vehicles with these features tend to show smaller winter penalties.
